Publishing a LinkedIn post to sell directly costs you 44% of your reach. That's what the analysis of 359,000 posts shows: TOFU content delivers a median of 36 likes, BOFU only 25.

In short

→ TOFU content (pure value, no visible commercial intent) gets 44% more median likes than BOFU on LinkedIn → The algorithm distributes what it captures — a BOFU post that doesn't engage isn't amplified and therefore converts no one → The LinkedIn funnel isn't the email funnel: engagement decides distribution, not publication order → The fix isn't to kill BOFU, but to anchor it on concrete proof rather than abstract promises → Check where your next post lands before you publish with the Post Analyzer

TOFU, MOFU, BOFU: what these three categories mean on LinkedIn

In marketing, the content funnel breaks into three stages based on audience intent:

→ TOFU (Top of Funnel): pure value content. Tips, data, analysis, opinions, storytelling. No visible commercial intent. Goal: build awareness and engagement at scale.

→ MOFU (Middle of Funnel): differentiation content. Case studies, competitive breakdowns, proof of expertise, client testimonials. Goal: position your authority with an audience that already knows the space.

→ BOFU (Bottom of Funnel): conversion content. Offers, demos, pricing, direct calls to action. Goal: turn warm prospects into clients.

On LinkedIn, this logic holds — with one extra constraint: the algorithm distributes based on engagement. If your BOFU post doesn't generate interaction, it isn't amplified. And without amplification, it converts no one either.

What the data says: TOFU 36 likes, BOFU 25

Across our corpus of 359,000 posts analyzed with metrics over 180 days (LinkPost study, §13.17), here are the median results by content type:

| Content type | Median likes | |---|---| | TOFU (value, education, opinion) | 36 | | BOFU (direct offer, explicit selling) | 25 |

The gap is +44% in favor of TOFU. This isn't a marginal nuance — it's a structural divide between two strategies.

The mechanism is straightforward. A TOFU post that gives value without asking for anything in return is shareable, commentable, memorable. A BOFU post that sells directly will be ignored by the majority of your audience, who aren't ready to buy yet. The algorithm reads those engagement signals and distributes accordingly.

Why BOFU hits a ceiling (beyond the algorithm)

The algorithm amplifies what engages — but the BOFU problem goes deeper than that.

On LinkedIn, your audience is mostly non-buyers today. At any given moment, roughly 3 to 5% of a market is actively in a buying phase. The other 95% aren't — but they could be in 6 months or 2 years.

A BOFU post speaks to the 5%. A TOFU post speaks to 100%, creates value for everyone, and plants seeds for the 95% who will buy later.

The result: a feed dominated by BOFU loses reach on the majority without becoming more visible to the warm prospects. The B2B vs. B2C content on LinkedIn dynamic follows the same logic — tone and intent matter as much as subject matter.

How to include BOFU without tanking your reach

BOFU isn't banned. It just needs to be anchored and rationed.

A few practical rules from the data:

→ Anchor on a real transformation, not a promise. "I helped X go from 0 to $30K in 3 months" engages. "My coaching will 3× your revenue" doesn't. → Open with TOFU, close with BOFU. Start with the value — an insight, a data point, a story — then slide your offer in as the conclusion. The CTA lands naturally and credibly. → Save explicit BOFU for posts with strong early velocity. If your first 10 comments come fast, the algorithm amplifies even commercial content. → Vary the mix. A common B2B ratio: 60-70% TOFU, 20-25% MOFU, 10-15% BOFU. No universal rule, but this balance sustains organic reach.

The structure of your post also shapes how the algorithm reads your intent — a TOFU hook + value body + BOFU CTA remains the format most compatible with reach.

What to do now

  • Audit your last 10 posts: TOFU, MOFU, or BOFU? Calculate your actual ratio
  • Identify the posts with the weakest reach — are they mostly unanchored BOFU?
  • Rewrite your next commercial post TOFU-first: lead with value, sell at the end
  • If you want to accelerate conversion without sacrificing reach, LinkEarn combines 1:1 coaching with all three ecosystem tools
